Gilda 8140/S Pendant

Gilda is a disc of hand-carved crystal, 44cm across, hung on a rigid rod in a corten finish. The carving runs round the edge of the crystal in close vertical cuts, so when the light is on the rim breaks into a ring of bright lines while the face of the disc glows evenly.

Roberta Vitadello, whom Italamp describes as the experimental and creative soul of the company, based the Gilda collection on the balance of metal and carved crystal found in 1950s design. Inside the crystal sits a satin methacrylate diffuser, which spreads the 24W module across the whole disc so there is no hot spot. The corten finish gives the rod and the plate above the crystal the warm, matt brown of weathered steel, which suits oak, stone and plaster better than polished metal would.

In the room, Gilda has a fixed overall height of 120cm on its rod, so it is specified to the ceiling: under a ceiling of 2.6 to 2.8m the crystal lands roughly 65 to 85cm above a dining table. One Gilda lights a table for four; over a longer table hang two, about 90cm apart. Italamp also shows it hung low beside a bed. The output is 3,800 lumens at a colour rendering over 90, and DALI dimming is included as standard, which is unusual in the collection. The family continues in two table lamps and a floor lamp in the same crystal.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has designed and made lighting since 1975 from its base at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
