Gilda 8140/P Floor Lamp

Gilda is a slender floor lamp with a cut crystal shade. A fine metal stem, in corten or matte champagne, rises 135cm from a glossy white metal base and ends in a shallow disc of crystal, ribbed around its edge, with a satin diffuser inside. The crystal catches daylight when the lamp is off; when it is on, the diffuser keeps the light calm and the ribs show as a bright ring.

Gilda was designed by Roberta Vitadello, whom Italamp describes as the soul of the company, and Italamp says the collection looks back to the 1950s: a light, upright structure rising from a white base to a crystal diffuser. The proportions are deliberately spare, with a 25cm footprint and nothing between the base and the shade but the stem.

At 135cm, the crystal sits just above the eye line of someone seated, which makes Gilda a reading lamp for an armchair or the end of a sofa, or a pair either side of a bed in place of table lamps. The narrow base fits into a gap a larger floor lamp would not, beside a chair in a bay window or at the end of a bookcase. A 7.8W LED module gives 1,000 lumens at a colour rendering over 90, enough to read by, and TRIAC dimming is included, so it can run from a standard phase-cut dimmer.

Corten has a warm, rusted brown that suits timber, leather and darker schemes; matte champagne is lighter and sits better with pale stone and brass. Gilda also comes as a pendant and as two table lamps.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has made lighting since 1975 and is based at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
