Dalì 4036/SG Grande Pendant

Dalì 4036/SG is a 120cm pendant of thermoformed glass. Tinted glass is shaped with heat, the process called thermoforming, and overlapped in several layers beneath a slim iron grey bar, so the glass hangs in a long, shallow curve with its edges stepping past one another.

Italamp says the piece is inspired by the imagination of the artist it is named after, and the overlapped glass is meant to recall his watches melting in the sun. The glass carries fine inclusions and a softly irregular surface, and the layers read differently from below and from the side. A 30W LED module set along the bar shines through every layer, giving 2,700 lumens at a colour rendering above 90, and the glass colours the light: light blue for a cool, clear wash, amethyst for a warmer violet glow.

Dalì is designed by Nava + Arosio Studio, the duo of Luca Maria Arosio and Paolo Emanuele Nava, who founded their studio in Lissone, north of Milan, after graduating with honours from NABA in 2014.

In the room, the 4036/SG is shaped for a dining table. Its 120cm length suits a table of 180cm to 240cm, and at only 4cm deep it barely interrupts the view across the room. The body is 40cm high on cables adjustable from 10cm to 100cm, so on a 2.4m ceiling the lowest edge can sit about 80cm above a standard table. Over a longer table, two can be hung end to end. The smaller Dalì 4036/S1, a 61cm bowl of the same glass, suits a bedside or a hall.

The module is supplied non-dimmable, with DALI and Casambi versions available.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has made lighting in Italy since 1975 and is based at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
