Caterina 4026/P Floor Lamp

Caterina's head is two pieces of glass stacked on a brushed brass collar: an opal white cup above and an olive green bell below, set at the top of a slender stem 160cm tall. The lamp lights both ways at once, up through the white glass and down through the green, so it gives reading light and a wash on the wall from one fitting.

Caterina is by THDP, the architecture and interior design studio founded in 2004 by Nicholas J Hickson and Manuela Mannino, with offices in Italy and London and a portfolio of hotel and residential projects. Italamp describes the collection as made of brushed brass with green and opal glass, intended to work in hospitality and commercial interiors as well as at home, and the floor lamp has that contract-grade simplicity: a stem, a base and the glass.

In the room, the base is 30cm across, so it fits beside a lounge chair or at the end of a sofa, and at 160cm the head sits above the eye line of someone seated. The integrated 6.4W module gives 740 lumens at a colour rendering over 90, split up and down: enough to read by, with a soft glow on the wall behind. TRIAC dimming is included as standard. The olive green suits dark panelled or painted walls and timber; Italamp also makes the head in white and agatha glass, a warmer amber-brown, in brushed light gold. The same glass comes as the 4026/AP2 wall light and a table lamp, for a consistent scheme across a hotel corridor or a house.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has designed and made lighting since 1975 from its base at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
