Borealis 588/S Linear Pendant

Borealis is built from two elements. A 126cm bar of light in shiny midnight grey runs in a long, shallow curve, and above it, on its own cable, hangs a half-disc of artistic glass in amber or dark amber, its surface full of small bubbles and texture. Lit, the amber glass glows against the dark line of the bar.

It is the work of Nava + Arosio Studio, Luca Maria Arosio and Paolo Emanuele Nava, who founded their practice after graduating from NABA in Milan in 2014 and work from an early twentieth-century house and studio in Lissone, north of Milan. Their brief to themselves is a design that does not settle into a fixed formal canon, and Borealis is deliberately asymmetric: the curve of the bar rises toward one end, and the glass sits off-centre against it.

In the room, the bar is 126cm long and 6cm deep, which suits a dining table of about 180 to 240cm or a kitchen island, hung along the centre line. The drop runs from 50 to 300cm on stainless steel cable, so it can also hang deep into a double-height void, where the glass is seen from the floor above. Italamp shows two hung as a facing pair over a long table, the half-discs turned towards each other. The integrated 26W module gives 2,100 lumens at a colour rendering over 90: light for the table, so plan other light for the rest of the room. Choose amber for a lighter, honey tone, dark amber for a deeper one.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has designed and made lighting since 1975 from its base at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
