Stream Floor Lamp

Christian Lava's Stream is built from metal chain falling from an undulating plated frame, tier over tier, so that it looks like water poured and held still. The floor lamp stands that cascade on a slender stem, 175cm tall, and brings it down to eye level, where you can see the fine links move and catch the light as you walk past.

Six E14 LED lamps sit inside the tiers, so the light passes through curtains of chain rather than from an exposed bulb and throws long, streaking shadows onto the wall behind. In gold plate it glows warm, in nickel it reads silvery and cool, and black nickel gives it a darker, smoky presence.

In the room. Stream's floor lamp needs no ceiling work, which makes it the way to bring this collection into a rented home, a listed interior or a room where the ceiling is already spoken for. Set it in the corner of a drawing room, beside a sofa or at the end of a long wall, or use a pair either side of a fireplace or a doorway. Gold plate suits warm schemes of walnut and brass; nickel and black nickel sit better with grey, black and stone. It sits on a 36cm base and dims from an integrated dimmer on the cord, so it works as low, atmospheric light in the evening as easily as a sculpture by day. With the Stream wall sconce and chandeliers it can anchor a whole scheme.
