Stanley

Stanley is Dodo Arslan's homage to Stanley Kubrick and 2001: A Space Odyssey. It stands 2 metres tall, three curved blades of brushed stainless steel, and from a distance it has the stillness of the monolith in the film. Then the light comes on: thin lines of crystalline light run up each edge and a further source glows from the top, so the steel seems to open onto a field of stars.

Arslan wanted it to capture the sense of awe that makes people look up at the night sky, and it does so with remarkable economy. The blades reflect and soften the light, and each change of viewpoint reveals another facet, another depth. At full output its four integrated sources give 15,750 lumens, enough to light a large room without any other fitting.

In the room. Stanley needs space around it to be read as an object. Stand it in the corner of a drawing room or a double-height living space, at the end of a long wall, in a gallery or library, or in a hotel lobby or private reception where it can greet arrivals. Because it is a floor lamp, it brings architectural light into a room without ceiling work. Each light source dims independently or in programmed groups through Casambi wireless control and the supplied Xpress switch, so the edges can trace a fine line in the evening while the top washes the ceiling, or all four can fill the room.
