Core is a globe of fine metal rods, laid across one another at every angle into a dense, irregular lattice, with clusters of faceted clear glass caught at its heart. Christian Lava designed it around the energy at the centre of the earth: the glass is the molten core, and the lattice is the crust it breaks through.
Switch it on and the whole room takes part. A single LED at the centre sends light out through the lattice, so walls, ceiling and the table below are covered in a sharp, layered web of shadow, shot through with flashes of light refracted by the glass. All of it comes from one 18W source with a colour rendering index of 90, so skin, food and timber keep their true colour inside the pattern.
There are three forms. The sphere, 70cm across, throws its pattern in every direction. The dome, the same 70cm across and 45cm deep, gathers it downwards onto a table. The small pendant drops the lattice altogether: a loose spray of rods and faceted glass about 20cm across, made to hang in groups. Each comes in gold, black nickel or nickel plate.
In the room
The dome belongs over a dining or meeting table, hung low so the shadow pattern spreads across the surface. As a guide, it suits a round table for six or a rectangular table of around 180 to 240cm. The sphere wants space around it: a hall, a stairwell or a double-height room, where the shadows can travel up the walls and across the ceiling. Longer suspension for tall spaces is made to order.
The small pendants work in threes or fives at staggered heights, over a console, a kitchen island or either side of a bed. They are not dimmable, so they suit places where they stay on as a sparkling accent.
The finish sets the character of the piece. Black nickel makes the lattice read as a dark, graphic drawing against the light; gold warms the metal and the light it gives back; nickel sits between the two. Choose 2700K for a warmer, candlelit tone in a dining room or bedroom, or 3000K for a crisper sparkle.
