Calle

Calle is a single flute of clear crystal, long and slender at the top, opening at the bottom into a folded lip like the flower of a calla lily. A tiny G4 lamp sits high in the narrow throat, and the light runs down through the crystal and breaks into sparkle where the glass folds, so each piece reads as a falling drop of light.

The design came to Terzani from outside. Luca Martorano and Mattia Albicini of the studio Draw approached the company with it, and Terzani took it on and developed it with its own crystal craftsmen. The result takes crystal somewhere modern: one fluid, folded form about 72cm long.

Hung alone, a Calle is a small jewel of a light. Grouped, it becomes what its designers intended, a bouquet.

In the room

The linear forms, three or five crystals hung in a row from a 110cm canopy, are made for a dining table or kitchen island, where the crystals hang close to eye level and catch the light from every angle. Five suit a table of around 200cm or more; three suit a smaller table or an island. The round clusters gather three or five crystals into a single bouquet for an entrance hall, a stairwell, or the corner of a living room.

Single pendants work in pairs either side of a bed, or in a line over a bar. The ceiling-disc version mounts each crystal on its own small disc and runs from a remote driver, so several can be arranged into a bespoke cluster of whatever size and shape the room suggests; the driver is included in the price.

Calle is a decorative light rather than a working one. Each crystal holds a 2W LED, enough to sparkle and to glow, so in a busy kitchen pair it with discreet downlights and let the crystal do the rest.
