Gilda 8140/LG Table Lamp

Gilda 8140/LG is a low, wide table lamp: a disc of hand-carved crystal, 36cm across, held on a slim stem above a round metal base in matt champagne. Inside the crystal sits a satin diffuser that hides the LED, so the carved ribs around the edge catch the light while the top glows evenly.

Italamp describes the Gilda collection as combining a metal base with a carved crystal diffuser, a balance inspired by 1950s design. The proportions are the point. At 23cm high the lamp sits below eye level, and the light falls onto the surface beneath it and out through the crystal edge rather than up the wall.

Gilda is designed by Roberta Vitadello, whose experimental approach Italamp calls the soul of the company. Her brief for her own work, in the company's words, is that a lighting object should be able to amaze and leave a mark.

Use it where a tall lamp would block a view or a picture: on a console or sideboard under artwork, on a wide bedside table, on a low shelf or at the end of a dining sideboard. The 36cm crystal needs a surface at least 45cm deep. The integrated 7.8W module gives 1,000 lumens at a colour rendering above 90, enough for reading at a bedside, and the 6kg base keeps it steady. The smaller Gilda 8140/LP, 25cm across, suits a narrow bedside; the collection also includes a floor lamp and a pendant in the same crystal.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has made lighting in Italy since 1975 and is based at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
