Carmen 728/100 Waterfall Chandelier

The 728/100 is Carmen in its freest form. Two chrome bands, a full ring and a shorter curving run beside it, carry rows of transparent Murano glass quadrihedrons, so from below the piece reads as a ring with a tail, 125cm long and 83cm deep. An LED source set around the perimeter sends its light down through the glass, and Italamp likens the effect to a waterfall.

Carmen is the work of Italamp Studio, the company's in-house design team, and its aim was a contemporary twist on the classic chandelier. Italamp calls it a jewel lamp: a minimal frame, and rows of glass doing all the work. In transparent glass the piece is at its lightest, a column of clear facets that picks up whatever is around it by day and becomes a single bright fall of light at night. It is also made in smoked grey and in teak glass, which hold their colour in every facet and give the piece more weight against a pale wall.

In the room, the irregular plan suits a long or oval dining table of around 220 to 300cm, the ring over one end and the tail following the table, or a stair hall where it is seen from above. It is 38cm deep and the drop adjusts from 10 to 100cm on electrical cable, so the base of the glass can sit about 75cm above a table under most ceilings. The integrated 64W module gives 10,600 lumens at a colour rendering over 90, more than the round 90cm Carmen and enough to light a dining room on its own. Italamp also makes this model with smoked grey or teak glass, and the round 729 and linear 719 in the same glass for adjoining rooms.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has designed and made lighting since 1975 from its base at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
