Carmen 719/120 Linear Chandelier

Carmen 719/120 is a single line of glass, 120cm long and only 3cm deep. A minimal chrome bar carries a row of transparent Murano glass elements, hung close together, and an LED source along the perimeter lights them from within. In profile it is almost nothing; from the front it is a curtain of glass that breaks the light into fine vertical lines.

Italamp calls Carmen a jewel lamp and describes the collection as a contemporary twist on the classic chandelier, built from a minimal chrome frame and Murano glass elements it calls quadrihedrons. It was designed by Italamp Studio, the company's in-house team. Italamp chose the 719/120 for the opening of Huma Kitchens at the Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, where it hangs above the kitchen island.

The length is made for a dining table of 180 to 240cm or a kitchen island of similar size; over a long island, two can run end to end. A 27W module gives 4,100 lumens at a colour rendering over 90, enough for a working surface. Dimming is not included; DALI, 1-10V or Casambi control is available on request and worth specifying over a dining table. The drop adjusts from 10 to 100cm, so the glass hangs 48 to 138cm below the ceiling: with the lower edge about 75cm above a dining table, that suits ceilings up to about 2.9m, and over a 90cm island the same drop allows for a little more height. At 25kg it is heavier than it looks, because it is almost all glass, so it needs a secure fixing.

Transparent glass keeps it light against marble and pale timber. Italamp also makes it in smoked grey and in teak, and the same glass comes in rounds of 72cm to 110cm.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has made lighting since 1975 and is based at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
