italamp-piola-687-200-pendant-chrome-light-gold
Italamp Piola 687/200 Pendant in Chrome and Light Gold

Piola is a lit screen two metres wide. Bars of cast glass, each holding a fine mist of micro-bubbles, are fixed at staggered intervals to slender vertical rods that hang from a horizontal top rail, and LEDs light the glass so every bar glows along its length. Italamp calls it a velarium, the word for the awning stretched over a Roman theatre.

Danilo De Rossi, the Venetian architect who has been Italamp's art director since 2016, started from the idea of a luminous diaphragm: a veil with an architectural presence. That is how it behaves. Piola divides a space without closing it, and the light it gives is the glow of the glass itself, held in the bubbles of each bar. The structure is chrome and light gold, and each bar is held to its rod by a small clear block, so the metal reads as lines and the glass as points.

In the room, Piola is 200cm wide, only 5cm deep and 215cm tall, and the cable sets the drop between 30 and 100cm. Under a 2.7m ceiling at the shortest drop, the lowest bar sits about 25cm off the floor, so it reads as a lit partition between a living and a dining area, across the end of a long room, or in a stairwell where it is seen from both sides. The integrated 14W module gives 1,700 lumens at a colour rendering over 90: atmosphere rather than task light, so pair it with downlights where people read or cook. At 67kg it needs a ceiling fixing your installer has checked; the canopy is a rail 45.5cm long and 5cm wide. Italamp also lists Piola at 130cm and 280cm wide.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has designed and made lighting since 1975 from its base at Cadoneghe, near Padua.

Configurations

687/130: 130cm wide, 5cm deep, 215cm high, drop 30 to 100cm, 9W LED, 1,000 lumens (to order through the studio)

687/200 (this piece): 200cm wide, 5cm deep, 215cm high, drop 30 to 100cm, 14W LED, 1,700 lumens, 67kg

687/280: 280cm wide, 5cm deep, 215cm high, drop 30 to 100cm, 20W LED, 2,400 lumens (to order through the studio)

Specification

Designer: Danilo De Rossi

Model: Piola 687/200, Italamp code 00687200 001

Dimensions: Width 200cm, depth 5cm, height 215cm

Drop: Adjustable from 30 to 100cm on stainless steel cable, canopy rail 45.5cm by 5cm, 5.5cm deep

Materials: Chrome and light gold metal structure, transparent cast glass bars with internal micro-bubbles

Light source: Integrated LED module, 14W, 1,700 lumens (not replaceable)

Colour temperature: 2700K as standard, 3000K on request

CRI: Over 90

Dimming: Not included as standard, DALI on request

Weight: 67kg

Rating: IP20

Certification: CE, EAC

Origin: Made in Italy

Delivery 6-8 weeks.

Made to order.
